Dear Boyd,

Thank you for your letter of yesterday, forwarding
a request that the King should become Patron of the University
of Hong Kong, in succession to His late Majesty.
The line that we have been taking in matters of
Patronage is that just because some institutions have enjoyed
the Patronage of previous Sovereigns, it does not follow that
they should have this privilege for all time, to the exclusion
of others equally deserving. The matter is naturally more
complicated in dealing with all the different Colonies, but
I was wondering if there were other Universities in other
should Colonies whose claims are equally good. I shall be much
obliged if you would give me further information on this
point.
E. B. Boyd, Esq., C.M.G.
Colonial Office.
Yours sincerely,
